Many praise Pay for Performance (and elimination of payments for adverse outcomes) as a successful strategy for aligning incentives, increasing quality and reducing costs. CMS and other payers in New England and beyond have clearly embraced Pay for Performance. However, many important issues remain:
- The validity and accuracy of measurements
- The impact on patient and physician autonomy and privacy
- Increased administrative burdens
- Provider incentives to avoid high-risk patients
- The impact on physician and patient satisfaction
- A focus on specific elements of care resulting in neglect of other potentially more important issues, particularly with the elderly patient exhibiting multiple chronic conditions
This conference will explore these issues and discuss how Pay for Performance is expected to evolve. Please join us for a fascinating discussion about one of the most important trends in health care today.
